Reacher Creature (Rochester)
THe plot is pretty simple. Good ole' Abe had a secret life: He was a vampire hunter/slayer. Mind you he'd no Buffy, but he can hold his own against the walking undead, and he did a pretty good job of it.
Overall, this was a pretty good read. Good, but not great and not bad either. It did have a few drawbacks for me. The biggest and thing that bugged the bejesus out of me was the author's writing style. It annoys me to no end what authors use parentheses. It just urks's the crap out of me. I find no reason to use them, and it adds nothing. Here's an example, mind you it wasn't in the book, but just an example of what I'm talking about:
I had lunch with a friend (I had the chicken salad and it was so yummy, and I was such a pig!!) and we had a good time.
See what I mean. what I put in the parentheses is useless information and it doesn't add anything, in fact, it slows the plot down. I guess that's my biggest drawback form the book.
Now, that being said, the book did have a lot going for it. We see a lot of historical figures, good and not so good in the book. Some of them were slayer and others vampires. I just thought it was a nice touch. I had to chuckle when Abe killed a banker that was a vampire, and his father wasn't that pleased. The father said, " You know that will bring more vampires!" Abe replied, "Then I guess I better make more stakes." How classic is that? I loved that part.
The author did his research, then he had fun with it to make it his own. Overall, it held my attention and I was glad that I read it. If you read it, you have to take it for what it's worth; a fun read. It may not be historical accurate at times. I had no problems with that. If you want to read a Biography, then you need to read a different book. If you want to read an entertaining book that will help pass the time and get a few chuckles, then this is for you.
Abe isn't Buffy, but not far off the mark.
A surprising book August 29, 2010

My son practically begged me to read this book. I finally promised I would, and decided to give it a try in a period of ennui. The first chapter intrigued me, and by the second I was hooked, and finished the book in a single day. Both of my parents came from Illinois, and we made frequent visits there in my childhood. To see the familiar features of Central Illinois - the Sangamon River, New Salem, Decatur and Springfield - in their rightful place historically yet haunted by the undead was fascinating. I highly recommend this book!
Surprisingly Entertaining August 27, 2010

Much, much better than you would imagine. The author skillfully interweaves historical information on Abraham Lincoln with a surprisingly entertaining fictional tale of vampire hunting in the early to mid 1800s. You'll find yourself questioning how well you know history by the end.
Great Story, Horror and History!! August 21, 2010

While I haven't read the other books, this one interested me as I find Abraham Lincoln interesting. The mix of horror and history makes this a very quick read. If you like Lincoln, horror, or history, check it out. Really, really, a good book, be sure to check out the ending.
