Chuck was the girl who lived across the street from Ned when they were children. But, when their parents died at the same time they moved away to different places. Ned brings Chuck back to life after she is murdered on a cruise, but he doesn't stick to the rules. Their romance would develop a lot quicker if only they could touch.

At the tender age of nine, Ned discovered that he had a 'gift', he could bring people back from the dead. However, he later found out to his misfortune that if he didn't kill them again (by touching them a second time), that someone else died in their place. And once he does kill them again, they stay dead. Ned inherits his mother's love of pie making and opens his own restaurant.

Emerson Cod is a private investigator. He becomes privy to Ned's secret when he witnesses him resurrecting and again killing a suspect he was chasing. He comes up with a business idea. Using Ned's gift to resurrect murder victims to find out who killed them in order to collect the reward money.
